지난 6일 오후 서울 광장동 장로회신학대학교(장신대) 미스바 광장. 운동복 차림의 신대원생 10여명이 마라톤 연습을 위해 하나 둘 모여들었다. “출발해서 10㎞까지는 설렘과 기쁨, 질주 본능에 스스로 취해 있다가 20㎞를 넘어서면서 고통을 느끼기 시작합니다. 30㎞를 지날 때쯤이면 갈증과 허기가 밀려오면서 ‘내가 왜 뛰었을까’하는 후회가 밀려들죠. 극도의 고통을 견디고 마침내 결승점에 도달했을 때의 감동…. 42.195㎞를 달릴 때마다 주님이 걸어가신 공생과 십자가의 고난, 부활의 기쁨을 떠올려봅니다.” 류호성(42·장신대 신대원 2년)씨의 ‘마라톤 신앙고백’에 모두들 고개를 끄덕였다. 류씨는 지금까지 73차례나 완주한 마라톤 경력 11년차의 베테랑이다.

장신대 마라톤클럽(장마클럽) 회원들은 뛰면서 예수님을 만난다. 장마클럽은 최근 교내 동아리 단체에 정식 등록됐다. 회원들은 체력 증진만을 목적으로 하지 않는다. 마라톤을 하면서 육체적 고통과 인간의 한계를 경험하며 예수님의 삶을 간접적으로 체험해 보자는 것. 이미 30여명이 동참했다. 이들은 매주 월·금요일 오후 한강변을 따라 10㎞씩 달린다.
출발 전, 멤버들은 빙 둘러서서 클럽 주제곡인 찬송가 411장 ‘예수 사랑하심은’을 큰 소리로 합창한다.

“예수 사랑하심은 거룩하신 말일세/우리들은 약하나 예수권세 많도다/날 사랑하심 날 사랑하심….” 더 이상 뛸 수 없는 상황에서 의지할 이는 오직 예수님밖에 없다는 신앙고백이다. 소기천 지도교수는 “마라톤은 건강한 육체와 함께 깊은 영성을 지니도록 돕는, 신학생들에게 많은 도움을 주는 운동”이라고 말했다.

장마클럽 회원들은 오는 28일 이천도자기 마라톤 대회에 처음 출전한다. 클럽 대표인 박인선(32·신대원 2년)씨는 “학교 이름으로 대회에 참가해 학교 홍보도 하고 참가자들과 지역 주민들에게 복음을 전하고 싶다”면서 “올 하반기에는 소외이웃 돕기 교내 마라톤 대회를 개최할 계획”이라고 포부를 밝혔다.
